New pharmacy takeover in Moray, thanks to bank funding

MB Pharma, a new pharmacy business, has set up its first premises in Moray thanks to funding from the Bank of Scotland.

The company plans to give the building an online presence, increasing the range of products and introducing private services.

MB Pharma took over an existing pharmacy, the only one in the area. This saved eight jobs. The director Mark Buchan, who has been a qualified pharmacist for five years, is already planning further acquisitions.

Buchan said: “After a long and challenging period of searching for a pharmacy, I’ve finally been able to purchase my own.

"It’s always been a long-term goal of mine, but securing finance and finalising a deal in the early stages of a healthcare careercan be quite difficult. This move marks the beginning of the most exciting stage of my professional life so far.

“Bank of Scotland has been by our side throughout the entire journey, offering far more than just financial support. The advice received has helped navigate the competitive bidding process and sidestep the challenge of applying for a new pharmacy contract. In my efforts to grow MB Pharma I will continue to seek support from Bank of Scotland, adding more pharmacies to my portfolio in the coming years.”

Stew Denholm, relationship manager at Bank of Scotland, said: “It can be incredibly difficult for young, ambitious pharmacists to strike out on their own, especially as new retail units rarely come up on the market. Helping the next generation get their foot on the ladder is key to our work with the sector and local communities, and a big part of how we’re helping Scotland prosper.

“Bank of Scotland is dedicated to supporting Scottish businesses across all industries, from healthcare to construction. Alongside its offering of sector expertise, it has committed £1.6 billion this year to help firms chase their goals.”

Moving into a new building is the perfect time to assess your current payroll system, specifically the way that you record employee attendance and their hours worked. This is particularly relevant after the Advocate General of the European Union Court of Justice suggested that EU members should order businesses to keep records of the exact hours worked by their full-time employees, in order to fully comply with the requirements of the Working Time Regulations.

Many companies, even in today’s high-tech world, still use weekly paper timesheets to record employee working hours. These have more downsides than they have advantages.

For example, they are very easy for an unscrupulous employee to fake. If there is no way of monitoring their attendance apart from their own self-reporting, then they can easily put in overtime or prime time shifts that they didn’t actually do.

Even an honest employee could forget exact details and fudge an entry. Inaccurate working hours could put you at risk of breaching the European Working Time Regulations.

Another example is the incredible amount of processing time that timesheets can cost payroll staff. They need to transfer often illegible handwriting individually onto Excel spreadsheets in order to convert it into data they can deal with for payroll. One typo could completely change an employee’s payslip for that month.
